Cantina El-Amin owns Tonz of Fun Entertainment and the global helium shortage is impacting its results.
"As a small business, it affects me a lot more than would a big company like Party City, because someone sells me helium, so we do not get it in bulk or in several tanks, "said El-Amin.
El-Amin uses helium at least once a week when decorating evenings. She rented a tank for her business, so she pays the rent in addition to the rising cost of helium.
"It's high enough that I notice the difference," said El-Amin. "I would say 20 to 25 dollars more than when I started using helium."
Experts say the price is rising because it is used faster than its production. Among other things, helium is used in space shuttles, military weapons, electronic devices and even in the medical field.
MRI machines need liquid helium to work.
News10NBC contacted Rochester Regional Health to ask if they had been affected by the shortage, but so far a spokesperson has told us no.
While the helium supply remains suspended in the air, El-Amin becomes creative to stay afloat.
"I'm building a frame and applying the balloons to the frame.This can always give a good illusion that they are high and floating," said El-Amin. "It all depends on how you design it and its configuration."
Party City has not released the list of stores that are currently closing.
