Less than two weeks before the first day of the 2020-21 NCAA basketball season, BYU has its non-conference schedule.
Cougars coach Mark Pope announced the team’s non-conference roster at a Zoom press conference on Thursday, and he is finalizing an 11-game schedule before BYU enters the conference. Western coast.
While some of the details on the non-conference schedule had already been announced, some of the highlights include a December 12 game with Utah in Provo, road trips to the state of Utah (December 5) and San Diego State (December 18), and a two-game Legends Classic swing at the Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort in Uncasville, Connecticut, to begin in December.
The Cougars will face five teams in the state before playing in the Championship, including Westminster (Nov.25) in the season opener, Utah Valley (Nov.28), games one week apart against Utah and the State of Utah, and a neutral venue game against Weber State (December 23) at the Utah Jazz Arena. BYU will seek revenge for a 102-95 overtime loss to the Utes last year in Salt Lake City, when the Cougars led by 14 points in the second half before Utah rallied.
This is the third year in a row that the Cougars have faced the former Mountain West Conference foe from San Diego State. The Aztecs have won their game in the past two years, including a victory at Viejas Arena two years ago and a 76-71 BYU loss at the Marriott Center last season. San Diego State hit a 30-2 record last year, winning the Mountain West regular season title and reaching fourth place in the national polls.
Last week BYU learned that it would face USC Pac-12 on December 1 in its Legends Classic opener, followed by a bout with UConn and Vanderbilt two days later.
Home games against New Orleans (Nov. 26, Thanksgiving), Boise State (Dec. 9) and Texas Southern (Dec. 21) round out the rest of the Cougars’ non-conference schedule.
The school has not announced any details about the possibility of fans attending home games, with the number of COVID-19 increasing at an alarming rate in the state. This week, Weber State and southern Utah announced that they will be playing basketball games until the end of the calendar year without fans attending.

BYU begins its 16-game schedule against the WCC on Dec. 31 with a scheduled game at the Pacific. In recent weeks, John Canzano of the Oregonian and Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports have announced that the CMC is actively considering hosting a conference in a bubble environment in Las Vegas. There has been no official announcement on this possibility.
When asked about the possibility of a Vegas bubble almost two weeks ago, Pope said, “I don’t know what I’m allowed to confirm or deny. … I know the WCC is exploring all possible options to give us the best chance of success in the league. It’s the truth.”
