After taking off 2020, the Michelin Guide returns to California with its Bib Gourmand peaks.
These restaurants represent what French society considers good value for money, not the foodie destinations that hope to earn Michelin stars next week.
The updated California list highlights 147 restaurants, including 45 newcomers, and represents 37 cuisines.
New Bay Area additions include several restaurants that opened during the pandemic, such as San Francisco’s Dumpling Home, Oakland’s Horn Barbecue, and Sonoma’s Folktable. Others have been around longer but are seeing recognition from Michelin for the first time, most notably the staple taco food Taqueria El Paisa @ .com.
Instead of sticking to Oakland and Berkeley, inspectors highlighted restaurants in a much larger area of the East Bay, including Alameda, Hayward and Livermore. The guide also returned to the Sacramento area, spotlighting an upscale taco restaurant and a dim sum favorite.
Meanwhile, many past Bib Gourmand winners like San Francisco’s famous izakaya Rintaro, Marin County BBQ Pig in a Pickle, and Oakland Burmese restaurant Teni East Kitchen remained on the list.
