The World College World Series starts this weekend in Omaha, Nebraska, and will feature 60 caps from the remaining eight teams in the tournament.
The choices range from as high as the fourth overall pick – Vanderbilt's JJ Bleday (Marlins) – until the 36th round Shay Smiddy (Rays) of Louisville. None of these 60 choices have signed with their respective teams because they can not do it before the end of their academic season.
The Mets still have two draft picks in Omaha. Here's who to watch:
Jake Mangum, OF, State of Mississippi
The Mets selected Mangum in the fourth round with a choice of 118, making him a player to watch closely. Mangum, a switch hitter, is the leader of the SEC's hits with 378, of which 103 this year as a senior. He was named the second American star team by D1Baseball and American Baseball and helped the Mississippi State achieve at least four consecutive years of Super Regionals – a first in the history of the program.
Cole Gordon, RHP, State of Mississippi
The other choice of Mets competing in the College World series is also in the state of Mississippi. Gordon, selected in Round 32, is a student close to the Bulldogs who is 4-0 with a 3.76 ERA, 11 saves and 65 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. Graduate students from the 32nd round do not usually reach the major leagues, but perhaps Gordon is a late defender who is trying big leagues with the Mets.
Mississippi State will play its opening game Sunday night against Auburn at 7:30 pm. on ESPN2.
