Best known today for his 1890 Cavalleria Rusticana – the one-act opera that mixes betrayal, adultery, religion and murder in an hour of music dripping with sweat and blood – Pietro Mascagni was far from be a one-time composer. The following year, eager to break the mold (or at least clean it up a bit), Mascagni created something entirely different: the charming country comedy L’Amico Fritz.
