Friday’s COVID update from the Minnesota Department of Health includes 21 new deaths and more than 1,500 new cases.
The newly reported deaths bring the state’s total to 6,032 during the pandemic. Of those deaths, 63.6% (3,836) were long-term care residents, with 11 of the 21 reported on Friday.
Meanwhile, through Jan. 19, the state reported that 214,050 people had received at least 1 dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, while 49,604 people had completed the two doses of vaccine needed for the vaccines to fully reach. effect.

The 1,525 positive results in Friday’s update came from a total of 42,680 completed tests, creating a daily test positivity rate of 3.57%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 4.95%, making it one of the lowest rates in the country.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percentage positive rate (total positives divided by total tests performed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is necessary to safely reopen the economy. This 5% cutoff is based on the total positives divided by the total tests.
