Today’s report includes data for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Tuesday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 1,032 new cases and three new deaths, including one person aged 25 to 29 in Hennepin County.
The death toll in the state is 7,656 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 58.8% (4,500) were long-term care residents.
The figures released on Monday are based on data from Friday, with the weekend figures due to be released on Tuesday as MDH no longer releases data updates on weekends.
As of July 22, the state reported that 3,136,633 people had received at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 2,983,368 people had completed their vaccine series.
The percentage of the population of Minnesota who received at least one injection, by age group:
- 12-15: 40%
- 16-17: 51%
- 18-49: 58%
- 50-64: 72%
- 65+: 91%
- Total population: 56%
53.6% of the total population of Minnesota, including children under 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine, have completed the vaccine series. This rises to 63.4% excluding children under 12. MDH has a public dashboard for tracking vaccination progress in Minnesota, and you can view it here.
Hospitalizations
Until July 26, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 168 (up from 153 reported on Monday). Of those hospitalized, 51 were in intensive care and 117 were receiving non-ICU treatment.
Hospital admissions have grown quite rapidly over the past week after hovering around 100 for a few weeks, increasing again as the delta variant spreads.
Tests and positivity rate
The 1,032 positive results in Tuesday’s update came from 29,728 completed tests, creating a test positivity rate of 3.47%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 3.02%, which increases as the Delta variant spreads, having recently been below 1%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total tests performed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is needed to safely reopen the economy. This 5% cutoff is based on the total number of positives divided by the total number of tests.
