Baseball MVP Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has suffered a left-sided injury and will need at least three weeks to recover. according to Shi Davidi from Sportsnet.
Guerrero was reportedly injured during a spring training match on Friday.
The three-week delay makes it virtually certain that he will be excluded from the opening day lineup – which Toronto has hinted at anyway, seeking to postpone his eventual free return.
Guerrero, who turns 20 on Saturday, spent time last season at Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo. He is the son of Hall of Fame member Vladimir Guerrero.
In 61 games in New Hampshire, young Guerrero averaged .402 with 14 homers and 60 RBIs. After his promotion to Buffalo, he hit 336 with six homers and 16 RBIs in 30 games.
The Blue Jays will earn one year of service if they spend at least 15 days in minors before being recalled. If there was no injury, the team would probably have been criticized if it had left it off the list to ensure the additional year of control.
It is expected that the Blue Jays will call him at the majors at some point in 2019.
Before getting hurt, Guerrero Jr. hit .211 with no more than 19 shots on goal.
