Saturday will mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers, meaning New York City will be home to enhanced security, lighted monuments and several commemorations.
The solemn day will begin around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at Ground Zero, where President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will be at Ground Zero on Saturday to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 Twin Towers attacks.
The Commander-in-Chief will honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that tragic day with a minute of silence at 8:46 am, the minute the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Former President Barack Obama is also expected to attend the ceremony.
Several streets adjacent and adjacent to Ground Zero will be closed, the NYPD said on Friday.
In addition, 13 state monuments – including One World Trade Center, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo and the Kosciuszko Bridge – will be illuminated in blue, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Friday. Flags in state government buildings will be hoisted to half the staff in memory of those who died in the September 2001 attacks, according to a press release.
At 1:15 p.m., former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) along with several elected officials and union officials are expected to attend an outdoor rooftop ceremony hosted by One Fair Wage, a non-profit organization of service workers, to honor restaurant employees at Windows on the World, a restaurant atop the World Trade Center.
Shortly thereafter, the FDNY, which lost 343 members on Sept. 11, 2001, will hold a 1:30 p.m. memorial service at the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral, according to a note sent to the town’s Bravest family members. A live stream of the event will be available at nyc.gov/FDNY.
Throughout the day, volunteers will prepare 200,000 meals for City Harvest at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, as part of an effort organized by 9/11 Day, the group behind the National Day of the service and remembrance of September 11. Shifts to prepare meals for needy New Yorkers begin at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., according to a press release issued by the organization on Wednesday.
On Staten Island, home to many current and former police and firefighters, the Staten Island Postcards 9/11 Memorial honoring the 263 Staten Island residents killed in the 9/11 attacks will be held at outlets throughout the St. George, according to Staten Island. advance. The event will begin at 6:30 am and will be webcast live on the Staten Island Borough President’s Facebook page.
As the sun sets, blue light will reach six kilometers into the sky from the roof of the Battery Parking Garage, reproducing the shapes of the Twin Towers, in a commemorative art exhibit, the Tribute in Light.
Also on Saturday night, the Yankees and Mets will face off in a Subway Series at Citi Field in Queens. Prior to the game, former Amazins manager Bobby Valentine will throw the first ceremonial pitch to Joe Torre, who led the Bronx Bombers in 2001.
