There’s a trending new recipe on TikTok – and it’s not sprinkles or twisted bacon.
Fans of the hit Apple TV show “Ted Lasso” bake the series’ iconic cookies in their own kitchens, and the result is buttery delight.
On the show, Ted Lasso, a small Midwestern college football coach hired to coach a professional football team in England when he knows nothing about football, tries to convince team owner Rebecca Welton to preparing his famous cookie recipe.
What Cookies are in the UK are actually cookies in the US, and Ted’s shortbread cookies are becoming a running theme for the series, which recently became the most Emmy-nominated freshman series with over 20 nominations.
Jason Sudeikis, who plays Ted Lasso on the show, recently appeared on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna alongside other stars Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein to talk about the show’s second season.
“We heard that real cookies aren’t that tasty?” Jenna asked the casting.
Hannah Waddington, who plays team owner Rebecca on the show, admitted she wasn’t always a fan.
“I’ll be nice and say they’re much better this season,” she said.
But the TikTok community seems to disagree with Waddington’s aversion to cookies.
“My wife wanted me to bake the ‘Ted Lasso’ cookies for her, so I did,” shares one user, who simply says “Mmm” after tasting them.
“Bonus points if you put them in a pink box and enjoy it,” says another, who wraps his cookies much like Sudeikis’ character on the show.
While Ted won’t reveal the secrets of his famous cookies on the show, Apple TV shared the official recipe with TODAY Food, so I tried making them myself.
The recipe was simple: the only ingredients are flour, butter, powdered sugar and salt. Everything was easy to mix and after spreading the dough into a square pan and refrigerating it for 30 minutes, I pre-sliced each bar according to the recipe instructions and put the pan in a 300 F oven.
Using my 8 x 8 inch pan, the bars took a little longer than the suggested baking time of 45-60 minutes to fully bake, as the dough was a bit thicker than it would have been. if I had used a larger mold. .
After about 75 minutes the cookies were ready. Eating them hot from the oven was absolute heaven, with flavors of butter and sugar melting together in the form of the perfect shortbread cookies. They were light and airy and melted in my mouth, just like a real cookie should.
