Berkeley's famous Ice Cream Shop Here, The Ice Cream Shop, suddenly closed its two sites on Thursday, according to a farewell message posted on Instagram.

"After 12 Extraordinary Years / We would like to thank you from the heart / For love, support and community / It's a wonderful adventure / We could not have done it without you / With gratitude – Goodbye !!! "Read the message of goodbye, which is signed by" Mary and all that was Ice Cream Here. "

The owner of the business, Mary Canales – a former Chez Panisse – opened the original site here at Elmwood in 2006. The store was renowned for its consistent range of dedicated fans coming out of her home. In December, Canales opened a second branch on University Avenue (in Shattuck) in downtown Berkeley.

The announcement took the community by surprise. As recently as November 20th, Ici was promoting its Christmas Bûche cake on Instagram. The farewell message elicited more than 170 comments in about three hours. Fans described the closure as "heartbreaking".

On Thursday afternoon, the main website of Ici still had no news of the closure.

The creative flavors of Ici, such as Earl Gray, Meyer confit lemon and pistachio with lavender and honey, have won over many fans. All offers here have been handmade from organic ingredients and from sustainable sources.

On Thursday afternoon, a reader questioned Berkeleyside about the apparent closure of the downtown location. A sign on the door of the store indicated that it would be closed until December 1 for repair.

Eater SF, however, reported that the original version of Ici had been packaged and that calls to all of Here's phone lines were unanswered. Eater announced the closing of the shop.

Berkeleyside will update this post if more information is available.
