Alfa Romeo’s 33 Stradale is the most beautiful Italian sculpture created in the 20th century. Such a bold statement could be argued but not easily refuted. The fact that Franco Scaglione’s design was only produced in 18 units, built from 1967 to 1969, does not diminish the aesthetic impact of this heroic – albeit tiny – supercar. This is what it was, because in its day the 33 Stradale (in Italian for “road”) set the fastest time for the kilometer stopped.
Its foundations came from the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 racing car, wrapped in a magnificent body built by Carrozzeria Marazzi, a small Milanese coachbuilder who was involved in many interesting projects, including Lamborghini’s Islero of the same period. The 33 Stradale also featured, for the first time on a production car, the dihedral doors that we see on so many Exotics today. Now, the reflection of the most beautiful Alfa Romeo road car ever made is evident in the new 4C Spider 33 Stradale Tributo, designed to honor its legendary mid-engined ancestor.
While the original 33 Stradale was powered by Alfa’s fierce 2.0-liter V8 engine and was tuned for around 227 hp, the Stradale Tributo adds an additional ten horsepower with a 1750cc inline-four engine. A featherweight, the little 4C tips the scales at under 2,500 pounds, and is good for sprinting from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Few cars offer as much pant seat fun as the Alfa Romeo 4C. Once settled into the carbon-fiber monocoque, drivers are treated to go-kart-like handling and the visceral punch of a 237bhp mixer motor screaming a few inches behind the seat.
Some not-so-subtle design touches make the 33 Stradale Tributo even more special. Each example is finished in the exclusive three-coat Rosso Villa d’Este exterior paint, a shiny metallic red familiar to anyone who has seen modern Alfa concepts at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy. The red theme carries over to the carbon fiber monocoque chassis itself, which for the first time shines with a transparent red finish.
In homage to the iconic Campagnolo wheels of the 33 Stradale, the 18- and 19-inch models of the Tributo feature five deep holes and are finished in a gray-gold color scheme like the originals. Bi-xenon headlamps, a race tuned suspension and an Akrapovič center exit exhaust add a performance advantage to the vehicle. The composite sports seats in black Dinamica suede and tobacco leather are the highlights of the interior, as are the special plates: that of the center console bearing a sequential number.
With just 33 units coming to the US and priced at $ 79,995, this is certainly the biggest rarity in the brand’s most exclusive model line, launched in 2014. It also represents the final race. of the 4C Spider in North America.
