There has been some pretty big news recently that suggests Chris Evans will be returning, in some capacity, as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This came as a surprise to many, given the end of Avengers: Endgame. Not to mention Evans’ personal comments on the matter over the past year. Whether or not this is happening remains to be seen, but the news is worth asking how it can happen. And, given where we left off with Steve Rogers, it’s very possible that Cap will return for one last lap.
The last time we left, our hero was in the closing minutes of 2019 Avengers: Endgame. The Avengers had managed to muster the Infinity Stones in the so-called Time Heist and negate Thanos’ snap, all while defeating the Mad Titan and his army once and for all. As promised, the heroes were tasked with returning the stones to the place in time they were taken, so as not to disturb the balance of time. It was Cap who ended up collecting the stones, taking them to different places across time and space. Still, when the Hulk tried to bring Steve back, it didn’t work.
We then find a much older Steve sitting on a bench near the lake. Ultimately, revealed by a conversion with Sam, he decided to stay back after returning the stones to finally live his life with Peggy Carter. Steve offered his shield to Sam, suggesting that he should become the new Captain America and take over. It was considered by many to be the perfect end to Steve Rogers’ cinematic journey.
But, crucial when it comes to the possibility of Chris Evans’ alleged return to the MCU, Steve Rogers is very much alive. That alone helps bring Captain America back, to some extent, in a future MCU project. Importantly, the reports were specific, suggesting that Cap would not be returning for a new solo movie. On the contrary, it would appear in other projects. So the easiest way to go about it, apparently, would be to bring old Steve back in a future Phase 4 MCU project.
There are logical places to do this. The most logical would perhaps be The falcon and the winter soldier. The upcoming live-action Disney + series will center on Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky, aka Winter Soldier. Mackie recently revealed that the series will deal with filling the void left by Captain America, examining who should step in to take his place. While many of us just assumed it would be Sam, and it could very well be, it hasn’t been sorted out yet. It might make sense for Steve to show up and offer some wise advice to his young friend on the show. Although the series has finished filming and these reports suggest it will be for something in the future.
Otherwise, the MCU has no shortage of opportunities to come in the next few years. Aside from the many upcoming movies that haven’t finished filming yet, such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: love and thunder, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Black panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2, among others. Marvel also has a ton of shows in the works for Disney +, including Hawk Eye, Stone heart, Armor wars, Secret invasion, She-Hulk, Moon knight and Ms. Marvel. And that’s exactly what we know.
The point is, the opportunities are sure to bring Captain America back. Looking at the events of Avengers: Endgame, the thing that might make the most sense is to show Cap flipping the stones in space and time. Six stones. Six episodes for Disney +. It would contradict the idea that Evans’ new deal wouldn’t make headlines for a project, but it would be a way to bring him back without destroying the storyline that had ended his character arc so well.
At this point, fans seemed divided on the news. Chris Evans has become one of the MCU’s most beloved elements in nearly a decade. He turned Captain America into one of the most popular superheroes on the planet in the modern age, which just wasn’t the case before The First Avenger was released. So there will naturally be some fans who can’t wait to see him return. On another side, End of Game served as a fence for Steve. Those final moments when he finally got to dance with Peggy could, and perhaps should, serve as a lasting memory we all have of the Steve Rogers cutscene. Bringing it back may tarnish that image to some extent.
All of this may be irrelevant speculation anyway. Shortly after the news broke, Chris Evans took to Twitter to address the reports saying, “News for me.” This suggests he’s not close to a new deal with Marvel Studios and Disney. That’s not to say it won’t happen, although it does heavily imply that initial reports at least jumped the gun a bit. However, if things go in that direction, there are a plethora of options for bringing America’s ass back for other cinematic adventures.
