Here’s how President Biden, the first lady, spent her busy day in Houston

HOUSTON –President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden had a busy day in Houston on Friday afternoon. During one of their stops, they met several volunteers from the Houston Food Bank.

Jill Biden arrived first to applause from the crowd of food bank volunteers.

In addition to taking a tour of the facility and speaking with many of these volunteers, the first lady packed boxes for those in need in the Houston community, including meals for children, the elderly and other people facing food insecurity.

About an hour later, President Biden arrived, met Brian Greene with the CEO and President of the Houston Food Bank, and took a tour of the establishment.

“To us it meant a lot that the President and the First Lady were going to be spending time with those of us who are trying to help low income families who are really struggling with hunger and all the other issues associated with poverty while you’re in a crisis, ”Greene said.

President Biden also met many volunteers and stopped to take photos with some of them.

“It was good to help the community and also to have the chance to see the president and talk to him and the first lady,” said Philippe des Boscs, a volunteer who took a selfie with the president.

“We are delighted to have the first lady and the president of the food bank. There is so much need for Houston and for them to be interested in coming and seeing what we are doing and how we are helping the community in the community to work with us, it is just wonderful, ”said Stephanie Berno of the Houston Food Bank.

“It’s a unique opportunity, it’s special,” said volunteer Maria Triancavespan. “We probably won’t see him again.”

Earlier today, President Biden received an update on recovery at the Harris County Emergency Management Office.

“We will be true partners to help you recover and rebuild after these storms, this pandemic and the economic crisis,” he said. “We are gone for the long haul.”

The president has learned that millions of water have lost water, thousands of people have broken pipes and 126 counties in Texas are under a declaration of disaster.

President Biden also took advantage of the visit to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The more people get vaccinated, the faster we will defeat this pandemic,” he told the federal NRG Park mass vaccination site, which is expected to provide 6,000 COVID-19 vaccines per day.

He also reminded people that he is no stranger to Houston, especially MD Anderson.

“When our son Beau was being treated for glioblastoma before he passed away,” Biden said.

President Biden and the First Lady returned to Washington, DC on Friday evening.
