With the rain of Sunday and the day of Monday, the Mets have a whole series of options as to how to set up their starting rotation against the Nationals. But Mickey Callaway said Sunday that the plan is simply to repel everyone.
That means a rotation that looks like this against the Nats from Tuesday to Thursday:
Tuesday, May 14th: Noah Syndergaard against Jeremy Hellickson
Wednesday, May 15: Wilmer Police Patrick Corbin
Thursday, May 16th: Zack Wheeler Anibal Sanchez
If the Mets stick to the plan above, it would mean opting to start Police on Wednesday instead of using Wheeler (on regular rest) on Wednesdays and Fridays. Jacob deGrom (in regular rest) Thursday.
Although it seems logical that the Mets simply use Rainout to their advantage, while eliminating Font's debut and making DeGrom debuting against the Nats instead of the Marlins, it's also hard to argue about keeping DeGrom) in good way to rest more.
Even without using DeGrom, the Mets would have the option of eliminating the start of the font if they allowed Wheeler to start Wednesday and activate. Steven Matz from the IT to start on Thursday (as had been planned). Matz is eligible to return from the IL on Wednesday.
Matz organized a session at Citi Field on Sunday morning while Callaway spoke to reporters. For the moment, his plan is to turn it on from the IL and come back to the rotation during the Mets vs. Marlins series, which will kick off next Friday in Miami.
There is also Jason Vargas, whose hamstrings "feel pretty good" according to Callaway. Vargas is eligible to return from the IL on Thursday.
