Prior to the Pixel 5’s launch, Google Camera and Google Recorder apps, among others, could no longer be loaded due to verification errors. Fortunately, a solution – if, perhaps, temporary – has been found.
What is happening
When the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G launched late last year, Google also started rolling out updates to its Camera app, bringing it to version 8.0, as well as a new version of the Recorder application. Unfortunately, these updates could not be downloaded to older pixels like previous updates could, with many facing one of two errors when attempting to install Google Camera 8.0.

In fact, as Google Camera has continued to benefit from improvements such as the recent update that lets you turn off Auto Night Sight, even Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G owners weren’t able to charge them. new versions to get updates faster. Instead, people are forced to wait for updates to arrive on the Play Store. At the time, a “solution” was found that involved factory resetting your phone, but that obviously wasn’t a viable solution for most.
What causes it
Thanks to the efforts of the broadest XDA Developers community, a root cause has been discovered to explain the failure to install Google Camera and some other Google app updates. The simple version is that Android 11 added something called “App Integrity” which allows the device to use a set of “rules” to check whether or not a particular app should be allowed to be installed.
XDA goes into the details, but Google Play Services does receive a list of rules and one of the rules says that the Google Camera app and the Google Recorder app cannot be installed by anything other than the Play Store. Any attempt to install the app with adb or something like the APKMirror installer app would directly violate this rule and is therefore blocked.
The current assumption that a factory reset would allow sideloading to take place is that Google Play services need time to download app integrity rules. During this time, Android has no reason to believe that you shouldn’t be allowed to update the Google Camera app.
Notably, these app integrity rules set a dangerous precedent for Android, as one of the main advantages of the operating system, especially over iOS, has been the ability to install apps without necessarily relying on the Play store.
How to bypass verification to install Google Camera
As indicated by Android Police, there is a simpler solution at the moment which manages to allow you a brief window to load the Google Camera and Google Recorder updates. The short version is that you need to restore your Play Services app to its original version and then update it again.
However, while it’s easier than a full factory reset, restoring game services still has consequences. On the one hand, you will have to set up your credit cards again for use with Google Pay. You will also have to redo your auto-save settings, and you may lose some data related to your COVID-19 contact tracing app, if you use one.
If the benefits of the latest Google Camera or Recorder app still outweigh these consequences, then head to the Settings app. In the search bar at the top, type “Google play servicesAnd tap the appropriate list.
On this page, you will want to press the three-dot menu in the upper right corner, then press “Uninstall updates. »A warning will appear, reminding you that you are about to lose data. At this point you can press “Okay. If this fails, you may need to deactivate the “Device administrator” privileges of Android’s Find My Device.
Once it has been properly restored, the next step is to reinstall the latest update of Play services. The fastest way to do this is to access the list of Play services on the Play Store, which can only be found through a direct link.
Once this is done, you now have a short window of time in which you can download Google Camera and Google Recorder updates without being bothered by App Integrity verification errors.
It’s unclear how long this solution will work, as it relies on reverting your device to an older version of Play Services without the built-in app integrity rules. It’s entirely possible that a future device, such as the Pixel 5a or Pixel 6, might not be able to use this solution, due to launching with a much newer version of Google Play services.
