Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a big step up from previous Galaxy Z Flip models. Not only is the device much more durable than its predecessors, it also comes with a significantly better SoC, a high refresh rate 120Hz display, and a larger cover screen. To make better use of the outer screen, Samsung has also built in some additional software features on the device that allow you to do various things without even opening the phone.

However, while the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s exterior display is better than that of older models, it still has some limitations. For example, Samsung only offers a small selection of widgets for the cover screen that allow you to control music playback, access Samsung Health data, check weather information, read notifications, and control. ‘use as a viewfinder. The company doesn’t allow you to access all the apps installed on the cover screen, which is definitely a bummer. XDA member CarudiBu discovered a useful exploit which allows you to load a custom widget on the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The exploit essentially allows you to open a GeckoView based browser on the cover screen which allows you to browse the web, and it also allows you to add custom widgets. The best part about this exploit is that it doesn’t require root access. XDA-recognized developer twistedumbrella has released a WIP launcher based on this exploit that lets you run any app installed on the cover screen.

You can try out the GeckoView based browser on your Galaxy Z Flip 3 by following the instructions given on this GitHub page. Note that you will need to uninstall Samsung Health before you can begin the installation process. It’s also worth noting that since this is just a proof of concept right now, you might run into some issues. The CarudiBu post notes that while you can use the custom widget and browse the web on the cover screen using the exploit, you cannot access the onscreen keyboard or record the session by course for the moment.

As for launching the custom cover screen, you can download its APK from this GitHub page and install it on your device. As this is also an early version, it has some limitations. The cover screen launcher in its current state requires that you set the screen lock type to none. It also doesn’t offer onscreen keyboard support. Also, to change apps on the cover screen, you need to press the power button to close the widget and then relaunch it with another app. But you can close the list of apps with a swipe gesture.
