iOS can now offer a choice of two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it is released for the latest features and the most comprehensive set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and always get important security updates.
If you’re not yet ready to install iOS 15, here’s what you need to do to stay on iOS 14:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone, iPod or iPad
- Go to General menu
- Faucet Software update
- Faucet Automatic updates
- Disable options to automatically download and install iOS updates
The iOS 15 update is now shown as an alternate update in the Settings app. If you choose not to install it (and make sure your device is configured not to install software updates automatically), you can continue to run iOS 14 on your device. When Apple releases security fixes for iOS 14, you’ll see them in the Software Update menu instead of iOS 15 updates.
This is one of the most significant changes Apple has made to the iOS update system in recent years, as the company has consistently required its users to install the latest version of the operating system to receive patches from security.
