Focus on work: Google to employees

Google has been asking employees to focus on work rather than heated policy debates with colleagues in the long-standing Internet society to encourage people to express their point of view.

The updated workplace guidelines for "Googlers" called on them to be responsible, helpful, and considerate when discussing internal discussion forums or other chat rooms.

New directives
"While sharing information and ideas with colleagues contributes to creating a community, disrupting the workday by having a heated debate about politics or current affairs the more recent does not, "says the new directive.

"Our primary responsibility is to do the work for which we have been hired, not to spend time working on issues other than work."

The updated guidelines indicated that comments made internally by Google employees, regardless of their intent, could become public and wrongly attributed to the company, resulting in erroneous impressions.

"We are all free to voice our concerns and ask questions and debate in respect of business activities – this is part of our culture," reads the guidelines.

"Be careful not to make false or misleading statements about Google products or activities that may affect the trust you place in our products and work."

Criticism
Managers or moderators were invited to intervene in case of policy violation, revocation of comments, closing of discussions or even disciplinary sanctions.

US President Donald Trump has resumed his criticism on Google this month, citing a licensed engineer who claimed that the Internet giant was working against his reelection.

Comments were the latest on the US leader, alleging, without evidence, that the Silicon Valley giants are skewing research and social flows to suppress the Conservatives.

Unfounded claims
Trump assaulted Google repeatedly, claiming bias against him and his supporters.

Google reiterated that these claims were unfounded.

In recent years, Google employees have challenged society on issues such as sexual harassment in the workplace; bid for contracts with US defense or immigration agencies; and the ability to adapt its online search engine for use on the highly censored internet of China.
