When you install macOS Big Sur on these Mac models, the installer may indicate that the update cannot be installed on this computer, or your Mac may start on a blank screen or a circle with a line across. If your Mac no longer starts correctly, these steps may help resolve the issue.

If you are having trouble installing macOS Big Sur on your MacBook, you can try the following steps:

  1. Press and hold the power button on your Mac for at least 10 seconds, then release it. If your Mac is on, it turns off.
  2. Unplug all external devices from your Mac, including displays and USB accessories, and remove any cards inserted in the SDXC card slot. Then turn on your Mac.
  3. If the problem persists, reset the SMC as described for laptops with a non-removable battery.
  4. If the problem persists, reset NVRAM or PRAM.
