A chaotic scene that left a New Orleans law enforcement officer shot dead during a high school basketball playoff game was becoming clearer on Friday night.
Here’s what we know at 8:30 p.m., about two hours after filming at George Washington Carver High School:
WHO WAS KILLED?
The injured officer was identified by City Court Second Constable Edwin Shorty as an Assistant Constable. The New Orleans Police Department said at 7.20 p.m. that the officer was deceased. Police Commissioner Shaun Ferguson said the victim was a Tulane University police officer and a reserve officer.
It is not uncommon for sworn lawyers to work as private security guards during their off hours.
The slain officer has been identified as Martinus Mitchell, 38.

WHERE WAS THE SHOT?
The gunshot occurred near the entrance to Carver High, 3059 Higgins Blvd., as Carver faced Warren Easton High in a playoff basketball game. People inside said they heard the gunshots.
The game was quickly stopped. An assistant coach Carver posted on social networks: “The senseless violence has taken another life.”

WHAT HAPPENED?
Ferguson said a man was trying to enter the school but was refused entry, which sparked an argument with staff. “The officer heard this disturbance and tried to intervene,” he said.
As the man was escorted out of the front door, the chief said: “This individual drew his gun and fired a shot which hit the officer in the chest.
Unconfirmed preliminary reports say investigators were trying to determine whether the man had been refused entry because he refused to wear a mask as required by public health protocols during the coronavirus pandemic. Ferguson did not address this prospect.
WHO WAS THE SHOOTER?
The gunman was quickly arrested but has not yet been identified by police.
Ferguson described the situation as fluid and said the police homicide division was leading the investigation.
