TL; DR
- Facebook revealed that an incorrect configuration change was the cause of its outage yesterday.
- The company added that user data had not been compromised as a result.
The social media colossus Facebook suffered a major outage yesterday, also affecting Facebook itself, Instagram and WhatsApp. The multi-hour outage was finally resolved and the company has now given a reason for the issue.
Facebook initially noted that its ability to diagnose and resolve the issue was complicated by the outage also affecting its internal tools and systems. So what was it that really caused the problem when they finally got to the bottom of it? Here’s what the team had to say:
Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted that communication. This disruption in network traffic has had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, causing our services to stop.
The social media company also pointed out that user data was not compromised as a result of the outage, dismissing notions that it could have been due to a cyber attack or hack.
Either way, we hope to see the company adopt a more robust infrastructure setup if possible. After all, what’s the point of having multiple communication / social media platforms if they all go down at the same time?
