Here’s why Taysom Hill turned to his family, not a buzzing phone after the Saints won in the first quarter | The Saints

Taysom Hill knew his cell phone was probably buzzing non-stop from text messages, social media notifications and phone calls after his first NFL start at quarterback Sunday night for the New Orleans Saints .

But instead of answering everyone that night, he left his phone alone to be present with his wife, Emily, their baby, Beau, and his parents who came over for the weekend.

“We just enjoyed the weather,” Hill said on Wednesday, noting that he hadn’t had much time with his family all week due to preparations for the game.

It had been a long time and Hill hadn’t hesitated to see how emotional his trip had been.

At BYU, four of Hill’s five seasons ended prematurely with injury – including his final season when he hyper-extended his elbow in a rivalry game against Utah State.

“I spent a lot of time thinking this week,” Taysom Hill said. “My wife and I had so many conversations about where we were getting here. And if I’m being honest, it has been an emotional week. I felt a lot of love from a lot of people. It was overwhelming in a good way.

All of those setbacks played a big part in Hill’s thinking this week.

“My wife and I had a lot of disappointments in college, where almost all of my offseason except one was spent rehabilitating from injury,” Hill said. “And so when you work hard to get over that mentally, emotionally, going into another season, having another disappointment, I would say that was the combination of every year of the five years that I spent at BYU, which really caused us to reflect.

“A lot of people don’t see behind the scenes of this process, what my wife went through with me and taking care of me. And so it was really rewarding to be able to have that experience with her. And again, c t was really a good time for her and I to reflect on all of these experiences.

But with Hill’s first start behind him, he can now focus on learning from last week’s film and preparing for the Denver Broncos and beyond.

Hill said he was generally happy with his patience in the pocket. When it comes to the things he has to work on, a theme that stood out for him concerns the timing elements on certain route concepts and specific protections.

Perfecting every detail is of the utmost importance to Hill as he knows how limited the window is for him to prove himself – as a quarterback – moving forward.

“There are a lot of really good players who just haven’t had an opportunity in the NFL,” Hill said. “And those opportunities are rare. So my mindset is to do whatever I can to take advantage of every opportunity. So I’m preparing as hard as I can for every opportunity, and every game is a great game for me. “
