If you were expecting definitive answers on the Eagles quarterback’s situation at Nick Sirianni’s introductory press conference on Friday afternoon… I have bad news.
This does not happen.
When asked directly if Carson Wentz would return to the Eagles in 2021, Sirianni said, “I can’t answer that. Again, evaluate everything. “
When asked if there was a timeline for when he would like to name a starter, Sirianni said: “I haven’t really thought about that yet, naming a starter. It didn’t even cross my mind. I’m just trying to assess the players on our team and bring our staff together.

During his professional career, while Sirianni dreamed of becoming a head coach, he probably envisioned his initial press conference to play out very differently. It would have been a day to celebrate his path to football’s top coaching position at the age of 39. to get the gig.
Instead, Sirianni was in an empty auditorium, standing in front of a lectern as reporters in virtual Zoom boxes dot him with questions about a messy quarterback dilemma he inherited.
Of course, that comes with the territory. For an Eagles organization at a crossroads, the quarterback decision is the most urgent. On the one hand, they have invested heavily in Wentz over the past five years in interim capital and salary and he has shown he can play at an extremely high level. On the other hand, Wentz has shown rapid decline in 2020 and appears to have a strained relationship with the organization. To add to the mess, the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round last year and Hurts played well in 2020 but not well enough to give him the reins.
So where are the Eagles going from here?
One way would be to keep Wentz and Hurts and try an open competition at training camp. When asked about the possibility on Friday, Sirianni said, “I’m not ready to say it yet anyway.”
“We have two quarterbacks at Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts who are top notch, who are top quarterbacks,” he said. “And a lot of teams don’t. I am really happy to work with both. “
But you know the old adage: if you have two quarters, you don’t.
What we do know is that Sirianni has been in contact with both quarterbacks in the eight days since taking over as head coach. Sirianni said he had a “good” conversation with Wentz, who also spoke to offensive coordinator Shane Steichen. Sirianni declined to disclose details of conversations between him and his new players.
But after speaking with Wentz, does Sirianni think the relationship between the quarterback and the organization is reconcilable?
“I can’t talk about it,” said the head coach. “I spoke to Carson, I contacted our players. It’s obviously been a whirlwind in terms of how much to do a week in this job. … I’m just excited to work with him as we move forward here.
