HGTV’s ‘Cheap Old Houses’ Show to Feature Dream Repairers in Upstate New York

Amsterdam, NY – Cheap Old Houses, Instagram’s “most addicting rabbit hole”, is heading to HGTV – and Upstate New York.

The Hudson Valley couple behind Cheap Old Houses have shared photos of affordable historic homes on Instagram for years, showing crumbling mansions, chipped churches, and shabby single-family homes with retro appeal. Elizabeth and Ethan Finkelstein, the real estate lovers who run the account, have built a fan base of 1.6 million followers around one philosophy:

Why go bankrupt and build a new house when an economical house full of character already exists?

And now, the Finkelsteins’ hunt for the best old homes extends beyond cell phone screens and television. The couple’s new show, “Cheap Old Houses,” premieres at 9 p.m. today (August 9) on HGTV.

Homes in the upstate are frequently featured on the real estate page, where they are admired by celebrities and locals alike. A few of the residences recently featured on the Cheap Old Houses slime-inducing stream include a $ 99,900 Elmira Castle; a $ 39,000 Cazenovia Italiante farm; and a $ 109,900 Canajoharie house with turreted Victorian charm.

Cheap Old Houses shares photos of residences full of potential – homes that, despite many bruises, just need a little creative love to become beautiful homes. Houses almost always cost less than $ 100,000. Some are even less than $ 10,000.

Much like Instagram, Upstate is playing a featured role in the new TV show.

“Cheap Old Houses” begins in the Mohawk Valley, where the Finkelsteins will visit a Victorian house in Amsterdam and a massive 1850s house in Fort Plain, according to the sensation’s website Instagram. At the end of the episode, the couple will choose which of the two houses to share with their Instagram followers.

The Finkelsteins will continue to hunt for cheap gems throughout the 10-episode series. During each visit, the couple will use 3D graphics renderings to help viewers imagine what each house could look like with a little TLC.

With any luck, the featured homes will find new owners to love them – scratches and all.

“We always say ‘don’t sleep until every house is saved,’” said Elizabeth Finkelstein.

New episodes of “Cheap Old Houses” air at 9 p.m. on Mondays, starting August 9. Viewers can watch the show on HGTV and discovery +.
