High-end 2021 iPad Pro models expected to support 5G mmWave: report

The next-generation iPad Pro line is said to support the 5G mmWave technology seen on current-generation iPhone 12 models in the United States. This technology is expected to offer faster speeds than 5G below 6 GHz over short distances. A new report suggests that Apple is actively developing its own in-house mmWave AiP (antenna in package) to integrate it into more of its portfolio, outside of iPhone phones. While this technology was only offered to US citizens this year with the iPhone 12 line, a wider deployment of the technology could be seen next year.

In its report, DigiTimes cited sources who said that high-end iPad Pro models slated to launch in 2021 are expected to offer 5G networks with mmWave support. He cites his sources to claim that Apple has successfully developed its own mmWave AiP modules, and the feat could help the Cupertino giant push the new technology into other products – like next-gen iPad models. While the report doesn’t explicitly state that the iPad Pro line will benefit from 5G mmWave support, Apple has traditionally introduced high-end features first in the “ Pro ” line. Other iPad models in Apple’s portfolio are also expected to benefit from future support.

“Self-sufficiency in the design and development of AiP modules also means that Apple’s next-generation high-end ‌iPad‌ products to be released in 2021 could also feature mmWave technology,” according to the report.

With the successful development of AiP modules, the report indicates that Apple is going even further in developing front-end RF modules (RF-FEM) in-house. The company reportedly intends to supply its own modems in the future.

Earlier reports claim that Apple is moving its line of next-gen iPad Pro to OLED displays. The high-end model of the iPad Pro will also include mini-LED display technology. Mini-LED displays use individual LEDs to produce the image in the same way as OLED displays. It’s said to be cheaper to make and Apple should push new display technology to its iPad line first. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the next-generation iPad Pro line could launch in the first half of next year.
