A San Diego high school lawyer spoke to school staff during his graduation speech last week to express his grievances against some faculty members in a very public way. His inflamed remarks then became viral.
Nataly Buhr, who attended San Ysidro High School, told CBS affiliate KFMB-TV that she wanted to draw attention to what she saw as a lack of support for the children. students. Buhr began his speech by thanking specific teachers "invested" in the education and well-being of students. But she then called other school employees for not complying with this standard.
"Thanks to my counsel for letting me do it alone, you were still not available," she said. "You have expressed to me your joy at seeing one of your students be adept at the medal while you have absolutely no role to play in my achievements."
She accused a teacher of drunkenness at school. "At the teacher regularly intoxicated during classes this year, thank you for being used to teach these students the dangers of alcoholism."
Buhr sarcastically congratulated the head office staff for teaching him to be ingenious in the face of apparent incompetence.
"Your negligence in having informed me of several scholarships until the day before their deadline has potentially cost me thousands of dollars," she said. "When you applied for a work permit, you often sent me away, even though you confirmed to my employer and my parents that all my papers were properly completed."
Manuel Rubio, a spokesman for the Sweetwater Union High School District, told KFMB that he could not comment on specific allegations but offered his views on the speech.
"It is unfortunate that the words of a student like this make one forget the positive," said Rubio. "There are a lot of female teachers who work very hard for our students, it's unfortunate that she has decided to express grievances."
During Buhr's speech, the audience responded with audible gasps and roaring applause. His mother also supported Nataly's bold gesture.
"I was proud that she spoke and got the message," Monica Buhr told KFMB. "It's something that requires a lot of courage,"
Throughout the country, residents of Valedictor have used their speeches as a way of highlighting the problems. Earlier this month, the valedictorian speech from Dallas High School Rooha Hagha's ended abruptly as she began to enumerate the names of the black teenagers who were shot by the police. Hagha said that the school had deliberately turned off his microphone.
