Highlights and overview of Android Q Beta 1

For those who have been following me online for ten years, you know that before Techaeris, I was part of xdacommunity of developers. I have worked with the Phoenix team, later known as The Collective and The Family. I've known a lot of Android developers and enthusiasts via xda, and I still talk to many of them today. Alex Cruz, who is part of the Dirty Unicorns team, has already installed Android Q Beta 1.

Alex explored the Android version Q Beta 1 for a few hours and decided to send his thoughts and some screenshots of the ROM to our attention. Android Q Beta 1

As many Android enthusiasts already know, Android Q beta 1 was released earlier in the day by Google. This has led to many changes, including a dark system-wide theme. This theme, although beginner, is very well set up and gives enthusiasts hope that the final version of Android Q coming out this fall. Below you will find a gallery of what the dark-on-scale theme of the system looks like in its current state.

As you can see above, the theme is really well set up in some places, but not so much to others. We really can not criticize Google for this, as this is the first time that this is an optional system-wide theme and because it's the first beta version of Android Q. That said, we are hopeful that will be done in other betas. Keep up the good work Google!

Let's take a look at some of the other features and improvements I've noticed throughout this first beta release.

Suggestion cards

Suggestion cards are no longer usable. Either you take Google for their suggestion or you learn to manage this map in the settings. In the past, there was an X in the upper right corner of each card, but this is no longer the case.

Indication of the life of the battery

In the upper right corner, next to the battery icon, in the notification area, you will see an estimate of the end of the life of your battery. In the past, this information was only available under Settings / Battery. This information is also visible only when the phone is not charging.

Authorization Dialogues

Authorization dialogues have changed. In the past, you had only two options: grant or not the permissions of the application for the duration of the installation of this application. Now you can grant permissions only when you use the app. This avoids the abuse of applications that continue to use the permissions granted to them even when the application is in the background. You can also always deny permissions if you find that the application does not need the specified permissions.

System theme settings

While we had already talked about the theme on the system scale, Google has also added additional theme options to complete the system theme. Options for changing the system focus, QS tile shape, and system font are under Settings / Developer Options at the bottom. Google has added these options in a very quiet place, because if they are somewhat functional, they can still cause problems with the system theme and / or user applications. I have the impression that these options will be moved in Settings / Display in the final version of Android Q.

QR Code Options

During setup, we found that unlike other versions of Android, it was now possible to scan a QR code to connect to your WiFi connection. Although it's something really unique, I do not see that many people are using it right now. The feature itself seems solid but is not widely used, at least in my friends' homes.

The notifications

Although most features of Android Q Beta 1 are welcome and look very promising, one thing really caught my eye and I just could not stop wanting it. . This was the ability to drag notifications in any direction. In the past, I could slip in any direction, and if I wanted to switch the repeat / do not disturb options for this application, I could just slide a little bit until the menu appeared. Now you can only scan to reject the notifications on the right. If you slide your finger to the left, reminder / do not disturb options for this application will be offered.
