Police warn residents of a Texas town to watch out for a dangerous snake on the loose.
Grand Prairie Police in Grand Prairie, Texas said on Wednesday that a West African banded cobra was missing on Tuesday evening.
Officials say the Texas State Department of Parks and Wildlife has granted the owner a permit to have the poisonous snake.
The owner told FOX 4 that his snake – which he had only had a few days – was gone while he was building an enclosure for him. He told the station that he should have had a lock on the cage, but he didn’t, which was a mistake.

Although the snake is very dangerous, the owner, who declined to give his name, told the station: “I feel very bad for the community and everything, for the fears that they have to go through.”

After the owner reported his snake missing, he, along with Grand Prairie Animal Services and a professional snake catcher, searched the owner’s neighborhood but couldn’t find the missing animal, police said.

Grand Prairie Police asked residents to immediately call 911 if they saw “a type of snake suspected of being the missing cobra.”
“Do not approach or attempt to capture the poisonous snake,” officials said in the announcement.
According to the announcement, officials and local hospitals have “initiated a protocol” to “treat this type of snakebite in the event of a human encounter.”

Dallas Fort Worth Wildlife manager Randall Kennedy told FOX 4 that as long as the snake is not disturbed, it is unlikely to hurt anyone. If he bites a human, however, the results could be fatal.
“Don’t overdo yourself. It’s not going to chase you, something like that,” Kennedy told FOX 4. “If you step on it, it will bite you. If you catch it, it will bite you. that, you’re pretty safe. “
