Highway 50 closed in El Dorado County at 4:30 p.m. Friday due to the raging fire in Caldor near Lake Tahoe, Caltrans District 3 noted.

The closure is in both directions between Sly Park Road and the 50/89 highway roundabout in Meyers, officials said.

The Caldor fire ignited in heavy wood in the Eldorado National Forest near the small town of Grizzly Flats on Saturday, burning a destructive path through the community of around 1,200 people.

While officials say the number of structures destroyed is undetermined, photos of the aftermath show an elementary school, post office and houses turned into ash piles.

The blaze consumed 73,415 acres Friday night without containment.

Cal Fire said more than 100 structures have been destroyed. Almost 7,000 structures remain threatened.

US Forest Service officials have announced the complete closure of the Eldorado National Forest until September 30 due to the fire, and the Rubicon Trail is also closed.
