A statement from the park on Tuesday said the unidentified 55-year-old was walking alone in thick fog on Monday when he was charged by a grizzly bear with two cubs nearby.

“He was able to deploy bear spray, but only after the bear knocked him over,” the park statement said.

The man was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and was last listed in stable condition with puncture injuries to his leg, ribs and shoulder.

Because the attack was seen as an ordinary grizzly effort to defend the cubs, no action will be taken against the bear.

The area around the attack site is closed to hinterland movement for a week.
