TRINITY COUNTY, California – A missing hiker was found dead in northern California over the weekend.

Daniel Komins was to complete a five-day solo trek in the Trinity Alps Wilderness on August 14th. When he was unable to return home, a major research effort was launched.

Flight operations in the north of California's highway patrol announced Sunday morning that they had intervened to help search for Komins.

According to CHP, an H-16 helicopter crew spotted a backpack on a steep terrain over Mirror Lake.

The teams then searched the area on foot and found the dead Komins near the backpack. The Trinity County Sheriff's Office said that a preliminary investigation had revealed that he may have fallen on steep, rocky terrain.

Daniel Komins, 34, has been described as an experienced hiker, an emergency medical technician, a member of the California Conservation Corps and a volunteer firefighter.

After hearing of Komin's death, Blue Lake volunteer firefighters shared the following message on their Facebook page:

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Daniel Komins. For all of us, this new Daniel, we have been blessed. For those who have never had this pleasure, I am sorry I did not have this opportunity. He really put a smile on your face. Let's keep his family and friends in our arms and guide them over the next few days. I would like to thank everyone from our local search and rescue teams at Trinity County Sheriff who have come together to help find our brother Dan. Thanks to you who shared via social media to spread the word and for all the generous donations.

Daniel, we miss you.

Chief
