Former South Carolina quarterback Ryan hilinski transfers to Northwestern. He announced the news Tuesday night via social media.

Hilinski entered the transfer portal on December 30. After starting 11 games as a true rookie in 2019, Hilinski has not started any of South Carolina’s 10 games played in 2020. He has played in two games and was 4 of 6 (66.7 percent) for 34 yards. He lost the starting quarterback battle in preseason camp to secure transfer graduate Collin Hill. When Hill was benched in the second half of Game 8, against Missouri, interim head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo called in rookie Luke Doty to play. Doty has started the last two games of the season.
A 2019 All-American high school class, the 247Sports Composite ranked Hilinski (Orange, Calif. / Orange Lutheran) as the nation’s No.64 overall prospect and No.2 pro-style quarterback. He signed up in South Carolina on a final group that also included Arizona, Arizona State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Oregon and Texas A&M. He remained engaged despite post-promised offers from Ohio State, Stanford Children’s Dream School, and local Southern Cal and UCLA schools.

Joined in January and went through spring drills … started the fall competing for caller number 2 behind Jake Bentley … was pushed into the starter role in Game 2 against Charleston Southern after that Bentley suffered a season-ending foot injury on the North Carolina contest final play … started each of the last 11 games of the season … completed 236 of 406 assists (58.1 pct) for 2,357 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions … averaging 214.3 passing yards per game, sixth in the SEC overall and all-time highs among SEC freshmen, and 209.3 yards in Total offense, eighth in the conference overall and third among freshmen … tied the school’s freshman quarterback records for starts (11), while setting new marks for successful passes and attempts … also established the marks for a true freshman in yards and touchdowns … for the Gamecocks since joining the SEC, joining Steve Taneyhill (1992), Mikal Goodman (1999), Lorenzo Nuñez (2015), Brandon McIlwain (2016) and Jake Bentley (2016).
Made his debut against Charleston Southern hitting his first 12 passes and finished the day 24 of 30 for 282 yards with a pair of touchdowns … followed by 36 for 57, 324 yards, two touchdowns. performance against Alabama, winning SEC Freshman of the Week accolades … became the second freshman in program history to throw more than 300 yards against an SEC opponent, joining Todd Ellis, who has throwing 342 yards against Georgia in 1986 … the 57 passing attempts were the second most important in a single game in school history, topped just the 58 Steve Taneyhill threw against East Carolina in 1994, while the 36 achievements rank third in school history, topped only by Taneyhill on two occasions. – 39 against ECU in 1994 and 38 against Mississippi State in 1995 … recorded his second 300-yard passing game in Tennessee, completing 28 of 51 for 319 yards … recorded his third 300-yard performance when he completed 30 of 57 passes for a record 325 yards against Appalachian State.
Became just the second freshman (joining Ellis) and the first true freshman to throw over 300 yards on three occasions … already tied for seventh in school history with Connor Shaw and Tommy Suggs with three 300-yard passing games in a career … between throwing pick-sixes in Missouri and again against Appalachian State, threw a school record of 180 passes without interception, beating the previous record of 177, set by Shaw … named to the SEC’s freshman academic honor Roller.
