A member of the Hillsong mega-church who made fun of the Covid-19 vaccine on social media has died after contracting the virus.

Stephen Harmon, 34, died at Corona Regional Medical Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

His death was announced by Hillsong founder Brian Houston, who said he had just learned the “devastating news that our beloved friend Stephen Harmon has passed away from Covid. Heartbreaking.”

Mr Harmon was admitted to hospital last month after contracting Covid and pneumonia.

In his final days, he shared heartbreaking details of his fight to stay alive.

“Please all pray, they really want to intubate me and put me on a ventilator,” he said on Sunday.

“Even the smallest movements and my heart rate is skyrocketing and my oxygen dependency is increasing. And please I am not asking anyone’s opinion on intubation, I will make my own choice, I am asking for it. pray.

He said he suffered from a fast heart rate, panic attacks, and was at risk of fainting and being intubated.

“If you don’t have faith that God can heal me with your stupid ventilator, then keep the hell out of my intensive care room, there is no room here for fear or lack of faith He wrote.

In his latest Tweet on Wednesday, Mr Harmon tweeted that he had decided to undergo intubation.

“I fought this thing as hard as I could, but unfortunately I reached a critical point of choice and while I hate having to do this, I prefer it to be by will rather than by forced emergency procedure.”

Before he fell ill, Mr Harmon had been a vocal opponent of Covid vaccines, and joked that he would never get the jab.

“If you’re having email problems, I feel bad for you, son.” I have 99 problems, but a vax is not one, ”he wrote on June 3.

Cases of Covid-19 in the United States are increasing at alarming levels, fueled by the Delta variant.

The seven-day moving average hit 40,246 on Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC), an increase of 46.7% over the previous week.

CDC Director Dr Rochelle Walensky said more than 97% of current Covid hospitalizations are unvaccinated people.

“There is a clear message going: this is becoming an unvaccinated pandemic,” Dr Walensky said.

The Biden administration narrowly missed its goal of having 70% of adults receive at least one dose of the vaccine by July 4.

Data from the CDC shows that 68.6% of the population aged 18 or older has had at least one injection.
