As a result of Andrew Luck's retirement, we do not expect much, or at least not as much, from the Indianapolis Colts.
Before the caller, often injured, left him less than two weeks ago, Indy was seen as the favorite to claim South AFC and as a potential candidate for the Super Bowl. But with the release of luck came second to guess.
Can Indy maintain the same production with Jacoby Brissett in the center? Did the Texans do enough on the day of the cup to skip the Colts? Why is everyone rejecting Jacksonville and Tennessee?
But according to long-time Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton, Indy's fears of disappointment are presumptuous. In fact, the vanquished think that Colts' alignment, with or without luck, has few peers.
"It's the best team I've ever participated inHilton told reporters Wednesday, by Stephen Holder of The Athletic.
Asked about Luck's decision to interrupt his football career, Hilton added, "We are not taking away anything from him, but this team is good."
Hilton has been with Indy for as long as luck has been. The receiver entered the pros via the third round of the 2012 draft, two laps after Luck was chosen first overall. He was present and was an integral part of four playoff teams, two division winners and one finalist of the championship game.
And yet, the receiver sees the iteration of this year's Colts, the first of his career with no luck even on the list, in mind.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard assuredly assured that it was the deepest. Indy's offensive line, along with Quenton Nelson, is one of the best in the league. The Colts receiver corps is more intriguing this season with Devin Funchess and Parris Campbell joining the team and Deon Cain returning after an injury. Indy boasts of defensive rookie of the year in title to Darius Leonard and a young and promising junior with Malik Hooker and Rock Ya-Sin.
The decommissioning of Luck to Brissett, a punctual starter who has just received his second contract, is considerable but not irreversible. This is partly due to the elements around the quarterback, elements on which Hilton preaches before the start of the season.
"I have been part of good teams, not very good teams," Hilton said. "But this team, in particular, we have pretty much everything you need in the field."
