At the end of July, Wizards of the Coast announced a surprise product that created a huge buzz in the MTG Arena community – Jumpstart: Historic Horizons. The new set brings many cards from the Modern Horizons 1 and Modern Horizons 2 Modern Direct Paper Sets in historic format to Arena, as well as 31 cards new to Magic and designed to work only in the digital client. .
Originally, the Arena update that will add Historic Horizons was scheduled to be released on August 10, along with some client backend changes that would require the August ranked season to be split in half. Now, Wizards has made a new announcement that the update has been delayed until two weeks later.
The client update will take place on August 24, and all new content – which also includes the new 100-card Historic Brawl queue – will unlock two days later on the 26th. Additionally, Wizards has decided to extend the Jumpstart game event until the 14th. October due to the short time between the release of the set and the standard fall set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt on September 16.
From now on, no reason was given for the update delay, other than that, the delay will “provide a better experience for our players”. It is likely that there are technical issues that have not been resolved, or that the development team will need more time to prepare other aspects of the set for release.
Due to the delay in the client update, the planned classified season changes have also been removed. In the State of the Game newsletter, Wizards announced that the August ranked season will be split into two different seasons to accommodate backend changes. With the update’s release so close to the end of August, Wizards decided to end the current season on August 24 and start the September ranked season immediately after, about a week earlier.
It also appears that Wizards have plans to follow through on one of the rewards promised in the original announcement. Since splitting the August season into two was to essentially create an additional ranked season, Wizards decided to donate gold and awards for both August seasons. Rather than eliminating these additional rewards, the rewards planned for the two seasons will be combined.
Wizards also says they will “stand by” their decision to grant the first 500 players of Mythic rank on August 10 (when the original season change was supposed to take place) an invitation to the qualifying weekend as if the season had ended as planned. You can find full details of the updated August Ranked Season on this page at Magic.gg.
The upside is that as an excuse for the delay, Wizards will add three historic-themed Premier Drafts to Arena, and each player will receive one free entry to each draft. Each draft will last about five days before moving on to the next. The sets that will be featured in each draft are Amonkhet Remastered (August 10-15), Kaladesh Remastered (15-20) and Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths (20-26).
Below you’ll find the full text of today’s Wizards of the Coast announcement, including a full rundown of all dates that have been changed.
In our article on the state of play for Jumpstart: Historical horizons, we shared that we are working on a major change to some of our backend systems. As we continued to iterate and test these changes, we decided we needed a bit more time to get them ready for release. Unfortunately, the release of Jumpstart: Historical horizons is related to this backend change, so we need to shift the release date for that as well.
Here’s the short version: we’re moving everything for two weeks. The release that was scheduled for August 10 is now slated to arrive on August 24, with Jumpstart: Historical horizons release scheduled for August 26.
We also need to delay adding the new Historic Brawl queue until this update, but for players looking forward to this, we will be adding a Historic Brawl event (no entry fee) on August 12. which will run until the queue is available. .
There are also additional impacts here. Because Jumpstart: Historical horizons now starts closer to Innistrad: Midnight Huntlaunch on September 16, we are extending the duration of the Jumpstart: Historical horizons the event will run until October 14, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy both sets.
We also shared in the state of the game that we would be splitting the August 2021 ranked season into two seasons. With this staggered release date, we’re also updating this plan: The August 2021 season runs through August 24, and the September 2021 season runs from August 24 through September 30.
Since we originally planned and advertised this as two August seasons with two sets of rewards, instead we are combining the pack, map style, and gold rewards from both seasons into the new August 2021 ranked season so that the players can still win everything we had before. I promise, it will be a great time to finish with a Mythic ranking!
While the season doesn’t end until August 24, we also stand by our decision that the first 500 players to reach Mythic by 7:00 a.m. PT on August 10 will receive invitations to participate in the qualifying weekend of August 9. to October 10; the August 2021 ranked season will then continue as normal, with the top 1,200 players ranked Mythic at the end of the season also receiving an invite.
You can check out all the details of the updated August 2021 ranked season at Magic.gg.

Taking into account the additional time up to Jumpstart: Historical horizons is coming, we’re also adding more historic-themed Premier Drafts with a ‘twist’ to help you hold on until Good start: historical horizonthe release of: the first time players join each of these drafts, we will waive the entrance fee! These Premier Drafts will last approximately five days before moving on to the next. Here are the sets that are making a comeback:
