  • HMD Global has built a modern concept inspired by the Nokia N95 which has never been released to the market.
  • The phone sports a sliding screen with a large speaker and dual selfie cameras.
  • The concept also includes an integrated kickstand around the rear camera array.

HMD Global has remade several Nokia devices over the years, including the legendary 3310 and 8110 from The Matrix film series. Now it turns out that the company was planning to remake another classic: the Nokia N95.

According to a tweet from HMD’s Juho sarvikas, the flagship of the N-series inspired a modern sliding concept that was eventually abandoned. And the company actually made a benchmark device, as detailed in Mr. Mobile’s video below (skip to 6:10).

Unlike the N95 which slid up to reveal a T9 keyboard or down for playback controls, the modern N95 concept slides left to right, revealing a duo of selfie cameras and a full-length speaker grille. Aesthetically, it retains Nokia’s current design language of a circular rear camera array and smooth lines. But cleverly, a ring rotating around the cameras acts as a built-in stand.

A vertical sliding system has also been considered. Swiping the screen up reveals a “super loud speaker,” while swiping down reveals dual front cameras and LEDs. Sarvikas notes that the problem with this design is that users cannot “access the cameras and the speaker at the same time. “

In the age of wacky smartphones that spawned foldables, T-screens, and modern flip phones, the Nokia concept doesn’t seem so over the top. If anything, the concept would arguably be the most convenient non-traditional form factor available, especially when watching content. According to Sarvikas, the “The aim was to ensure user-friendliness in landscape and portrait mode as well as comfortable one-handed operation. They probably nailed that with the side slide.

Unlike the more adventurous form factors currently available, a simple side slider would likely be cheaper to build than a foldable or flip phone. Dare we say, if it’s anything like the N95, it should also be pretty rugged.

While there are apparently no plans to bring this concept to market at this time, we see no reason why HMD wouldn’t consider sliding phones in the future. It remains to be seen whether this device can capture the magic of the N95 and bring something truly useful to the market.
