Hockey player Jimmy Hayes died a day after celebrating his son’s 2nd birthday

Just hours before his unexpected death on Monday, former professional hockey player Jimmy Hayes was celebrating his son’s second birthday with his family.

Hayes, 31, and his wife Kristen both shared photos and videos of their toddler Beau’s special day on Sunday.

In one photo, reposted by a friend on Hayes’ Instagram story on Sunday, Beau was sitting at a children’s table with another toddler waiting for a birthday cake – which turned out to be an impressive dessert topped with ‘a recycling truck leaving pieces of candy in its wake.

Kristen also shared some behind-the-scenes glimpses of the birthday party on her Instagram Story, including a sweet video of Hayes jumping on a trampoline with Beau.

A photo posted to her account showed Hayes pushing Beau and 3-month-old Mac in a double stroller.

“My boys 🤍” she wrote above the snapshot.

There was also a sweet video of Hayes jumping on a trampoline with Beau, and a photo of the father-son couple in a playroom.

Hayes was pronounced dead Monday morning at his home in suburban Boston, a law enforcement official said The Boston Globe. His cause of death has not yet been released.

The athlete’s death comes just over three months after he and Kristen welcomed their son Mac on May 5.

Sharing the news of the birth of her second son on Instagram the next day, Hayes wrote: “Mac ‘Daddy’ Hayes arrived at 8.4 pounds and 20 inches 5/5/21 #CincoDeMaco.”

Hayes’ last post on the grid before her death was shared days later to wish Kristen a Happy Mother’s Day.

“Happy Mother’s Day to this amazing mom !!!” he wrote in the caption. “I can’t thank you enough for what you do for us, we love you so much. #Boymom.”

Hayes played seven seasons in the NHL after playing for Boston College. He played for two years on his hometown team, the Boston Bruins.

“Boston Bruins are heartbroken by the passing of Dorchester native and former Bruin Jimmy Hayes,” said NHL team shared in a statement On Monday. “Our thoughts are with his wife Kristen, his sons Beau and Mac and the entire Hayes family during this very difficult time.”

After playing his final season in the NHL in 2019, Hayes started a podcast, Missin curfew, along with other former hockey players Shane O’Brien and Scottie Upshall.

The podcast’s Twitter account shared a statement on Hayes’ death Monday: “We lost our brother today. Goodbye Jimmy, we will love you forever. Our thoughts, prayers and love are with the Hayes family, his wife Kristen and his two beautiful boys , Beau and Mac. We’re heartbroken and absolutely devastated today. We appreciate all kind words 💙 “
