The Steelers made it official on Monday, putting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the Reserves / Injured list, ending his 2019 season.
With Roethlisberger missing for the year, the Steelers promoted rookie quarterback Devlin Hodges of the training squad to the 53-man squad. Hodges said he was ready to do whatever was asked of him in his role as the team's No. 2 quarterback.
"It's something I've done every day since I've been here, competing, having fun, and getting better every day," said Hodges. "That's what I will continue to do."
Hodges, a rookie from Samford, completed 20 of his 38 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason, with an interception.
Hodges initially signed with the Steelers as a rookie free agent after making a good impression as a novice player as a novice player. In Samford, he set a school season record of 4,283 rushing yards, breaking his own record in 2016. He won the Walter Payton Award, presented annually to the top offensive player in FCS football. Hodges also won the offensive player SoCon of the year for the third year in a row. Hodges finished his university career with 14,584 passing yards.
The Steelers released Hodges when the team was reduced to the roster of 53 players, but he was recruited by the training team this week.
