Hold the line and wait for a cheaper iPhone? Apple will launch a low-cost phone next year: report

Apple is expected to announce a series of devices next week, but not an economic iPhone – this will not happen until next year, says a new report.

The cheap phone, expected next spring, would be the successor to the iPhone SE at $ 399, according to Nikkei's report. This small 4 inch iPhone is sold well but was abandoned by Apple in September 2018.

The size of the new model "will be similar to that of the 4.7-inch iPhone 8" introduced in 2017, sources told Nikkei. And the new model will share many of the same components with Apple's flagship iPhones.

Apple will cut costs by using an LCD (liquid crystal display) instead of the more expensive OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display used on its high-end iPhones, Nikkei said.

But it's no small deal that this new version of the iPhone SE is a success.

The Apple iPhone 11 event: what to expect

"The iPhone SE was relatively popular," Fox News told Jitesh Ubrani, an analyst at IDC, a market research specialist. "But the market has changed considerably since then. Today, a smaller screen size is no longer exciting, "he said.

Apple needs a device to halt its loss of market share. Apple sold 33.8 million new iPhones in the second quarter of 2019, which "dropped significantly compared to the same quarter of last year," IDC said in a recent report.

And the Chinese handset maker Huawei has reached the world's second largest smartphone shipments, a place that Apple once held.

The Apple event next week could, however, give Apple a boost and give iPhone users a reason to upgrade. The tech giant is expected to launch three new iPhones next Tuesday.

The main attraction of the event should be the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The iPhone 11 Pro should feature a new triple-camera lens technology and a next-generation AI.

These phones will be expensive, however. For example, Apple's flagship iPhone XS phones are now selling for $ 999, the price of a quality laptop.

Morgan Stanley, in a recent research note, believes that a strong interest in new iPhones will not manifest until the arrival of a future iPhone 5G.
