Holland America cruise ships collide while "parallel parking job went bad"

Parallel parking is difficult, especially for cruise ships.

While berthing at Vancouver Harbor near Canada Place, a Holland America ship collided with another ship from the same moored cruise line. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although both vessels suffered minor damage during the incident.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority confirmed that the accident occurred early in the morning of May 4, when the Oosterdam struck the Nieuw Amsterdam, damaging six of the cabin verandas at Nieuw Amsterdam. The Oosterdam also suffered minor damage, although all of these occurred above the waterline. The repairs started immediately and none of the ship's routes should be affected.

After going to Seattle on Sunday, Oosterdam has to leave Sunday for a seven-day Alaska cruise. The Nieuw Amsterdam, meanwhile, began Saturday a seven-day return trip to Alaska.

Susan Carrusca, a guest who was on the Nieuw Amsterdam at the time of the collision, told the Vancouver Sun that she had felt a shock and that she had seen something splashing the water. She claims to have heard members of the crew shouting, "They hit us". According to her, they were first ordered to evacuate, but this order was later canceled.
