LOver a month ago, during the last general election debate, President Donald Trump said, “I am the least racist person in this room.” Even setting aside the fact that he was talking to NBC News’ Kristen Welker, a black woman, the statement was laughable.
Whether it’s running a full-page ad calling for the execution of the last exonerated ‘Central Park Five’, or launching his presidential campaign calling Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers, Trump’s racism doesn’t has never been a secret. In recent years, rumors have circulated that he would freely use the “N word” during his stay as a host of The celebrity apprentice (in addition to calling contestant Lil Jon an “Uncle Tom”). Trump would always deny them and even former staff members have disputed the existence of an alleged tape.
Now, a former contestant on this show is speaking out for the first time about being the target of racial slurs by the current president.
During an appearance on SiriusXM Urban View The Karen Hunter Show On Tuesday, actress Holly Robinson Peete opened up about what it was like to find out her run had prevented her from winning the third season of Trump’s reality show.
Peete, best known for her roles on 21 Jump Street and Hangin ‘with Mr. Cooper, said she would never have appeared on the show if it had been after Trump’s “birther” attacks on President Barack Obama. Before agreeing to appear, she asked producer Mark Burnett, “You won’t try to make me the new Omarosa, make me the bad black lady or whatever, are you?” in reference to The apprentice villain who then ended up secretly recording Trump in his own White House.
“I found him a little bit dirty and upbeat and stuff,” she said of Trump, “but I didn’t think he was fair – who he is now, I haven’t seen him . ” It wasn’t until after “losing” to Bret Michaels in the season finale that she says she found out how Trump spoke about her behind her back.
“Shortly after the final, rumors started to circulate that he had thrown an ‘N-word’ referring to me,” she continued. “When the producer told me when it happened, in the finale, I remember the moment. I wasn’t within earshot, but I could see them deciding between me and Bret Michaels.
She remembers seeing Trump “talking with producers and they’re really lively and that’s when I heard he said, ‘They want the’ N word ‘to win.” Because I guess the network wanted me to win or be picked and Trump wanted Bret.
This specific rumor has been around for some time, with comedian Noel Casler, who worked as a talent wrestler on Celebrity apprentice, by sharing it on Twitter last year.
“How could anyone believe he wouldn’t say something like that?” Peete asked later in the interview. “I firmly believe that he probably uses this language all the time. And then by the time it started to resurface, I didn’t even tackle it too much because I wanted to know what difference is it going to make? People have accepted the things he said that are so mean about so many other people, what difference is it going to make if he says that about me?
