Hollywood’s iconic Barris Kustom car store set to close

While the one in the showroom is a copy, the original jet black Batmobile built by Barris was once a Lincoln Futura concept car he bought from Ford for just one dollar. In a three-week whirlwind, he and his team transformed it into the Caped Crusaders supercar, and many years later Barris sold it for over $ 4 million (the payback is mind-blowing).

Pieces of Barris’ work are everywhere. After raising $ 500 in cash, then teenage Jim McNiel picked up the Hirohata Mercury in 1963 from a used parking lot and restored it in the 1980s with the help of automotive historian and author Pat Ganahl from Rod and Custom magazine. Today it is on display at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, where anyone can visit it and admire its beauty.

I hate to think of this historic site as anything else, but it looks like it is heading in that direction. I’m still hoping someone will rush in and save him like McNiel did for the Merc.
