Apple has officially released iOS 14.4 and a corresponding update for its HomePod mini speaker, adding the long-promised Ultra-Wideband (UWB) transfer function that will make it easier for new iPhones to transfer music, calls. and podcasts between the two devices.
While the original HomePod and HomePod mini have been supporting music streaming for some time, the smaller device has a U1 ultra-wideband chip that promises to make it even easier to transfer content from a device. iPhone 12 or iPhone 11. The new and improved U1 functionality also adds additional features, including new visual and haptic feedback. The U1-based system will also give you the ability to display listening suggestions when you bring your phone closer and to display media controls on your iPhone without you having to unlock it first.
The ultra-wideband transfer feature was originally featured when the HomePod mini was first announced, but it wasn’t included in the original version. Instead, Apple promised it would be available later in 2020 (a deadline the company slightly missed).
To take advantage of the new update, you’ll need an updated HomePod mini with the latest software, as well as an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 device with U1 that runs iOS 14.4. The original HomePod is not compatible with the new feature, however, due to its lack of a U1 chip.
