Apple today released HomePod Software 15 beta 3 for the HomePod mini and HomePod, and it looks like the update supports lossless streaming in Apple Music. It comes as Apple has promised assistance in a future software update …
Previously, when Apple introduced lossless Apple Music quality for all other devices, the company said it would support that quality in a future HomePod update. With HomePod 15 software beta 1, the company introduced the lossless option in the Home app, but it didn’t work. With Beta 2, Apple removed this option completely, but with today’s release of Beta 3, it has now reinstated it.
Both the original HomePod and the mini model now support lossless audio quality. If you are using iOS 15 and this update on your smart speaker, follow these steps:
- Open the Home app
- Click the Home icon in the upper left corner
- Choose “Home settings” then click on your profile
- In “Media”, click on the “Apple Music” tab
- Activate “Lossless audio”
Now when you listen to a song that supports Lossless, the little “Lossless” icon on the Apple Music player will appear.
There is already a way to play lossless songs via AirPlay on the HomePod, but it is a bit tricky. You can learn more about it here.
Last week, a number of users started reporting that their HomePods were suddenly dying. As this appears to be an issue with the public and beta versions, Apple may have fixed it with this update.
One of the users who reported this issue suddenly lost seven of their HomePods:
I have a total of 19 HomePods at home. Six of them are in Beta and the others in 14.6. To date, seven no longer work. Four in beta and three in 14.6. I use HomePods normally and listen to music every now and then but not very loud, averaging around 20% volume. All those in the beta are connected as default speakers on Apple TV.
