The Japanese automaker Honda is expected to announce the closure of its Swindon plant in 2022, putting at risk 3,500 jobs, sources said.

The Japanese manufacturer will close the plant in 2022 but will retain its European headquarters in Bracknell, Berkshire.

According to sources, Honda will make an announcement on the future of the company on Tuesday morning.

Honda declined to comment on the claims that were first reported by Sky News.

Honda produces more than 100,000 Civic cars in Swindon for the global market. It is the only factory of the company in the EU.

Fears of Brexit

According to Sky, it was likely that Honda would relocate the facility to its domestic market, Japan.

Brexit is considered a determining factor in the decision. The automaker is worried about the imposition of new tariffs after the UK's departure from the EU.

The Japanese automaker Nissan has also called on Brexit to justify the cancellation of its X-Trail SUV construction project in Sunderland earlier this month.

Ford and Jaguar Land Rover have also expressed concerns about the risk of a Brexit potentially without a transaction.

Last month, Honda announced that it would shut down the plant for six days in April as part of its preparations for any post Brexit disruption.

The company said the decision was aimed at adapting to "all possible outcomes related to logistics and border issues".

The company said it would help recover lost production if parts shipments were blocked at borders.

Last year, the vice president of Honda Europe warned that if the UK left the EU without an agreement, it would cost tens of millions of pounds to its business.

Ian Howells told the BBC that leaving the bloc without an agreement would affect the competitiveness of the car manufacturer in Europe.

He added that the Japanese company was preparing for the abandonment of negotiations, but had not considered moving its Swindon plant.
