Tonight, HBO aired Game of thrones season eight, episode four. Taking place after the epic battle of Winterfell, the episode finally sees a long story of love unfold. SPOILERS for the episode follow.
In tonight's episode, the forces of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow in the North celebrate their victory against the Night King's army of the dead. During the festivities, Jaime Lannister and Brienne Of Tarth leave alone. They play one game, then one thing leads to another and they end up consuming a relationship that is ripe with tension since the second season of Game of thrones.
Brienne met Jaime for the first time when he was a prisoner of Catelyn Stark. Catelyn hoped to exchange Jaime for her two daughters, Sansa and Arya. Jaime complicated things by killing one of the members of a noble house loyal to the Starks. To make sure Jaime is not killed, Catelyn faked his escape and sent him to King's Landing with Brienne.
Brienne and Jaime were captured by men working for Bolton House, another Stark house, and taken to Harrenhal. Bolton's men tried to rape Brienne, but Jaime saved her and lost her arm. Jaime was later released but returned to save Brienne new cruelties. Together, they left for King's Landing.
They arrived at King's Landing safely. After Sansa Stark escaped from the city during the purple wedding, Jaime asked Brienne to keep the promise made to Catelyn Stark to protect her daughters. He gave her an armor and a new sword extracted from the Valyrian steel blade of Ned Stark's sword, Ice. He called this the Keeper of the oath and before sending Brienne on his way.
They met in Winterfell before the Battle of Winterfell. On the eve of the battle, under Tormund's impetus, Jaime finally realized Brienne's dream of becoming a knight of the seven kingdoms by making her knight himself. Brienne and Jaime fought side by side during the battle, defending Winterfell and Westeros from the King's Army of the Night. What this means for their future – especially given Jaime's relationship with Cersei Lannister – remains to be done.
