It’s never too early to warm up the harness. Just look at September. We have no pleasure in reminding you that three of this summer’s hottest seats are now unoccupied. Randy Edsall of UConn, Clay Helton of USC and Chad Lunsford of Georgia Southern were all fired last month.

The harness has warmed up considerably five weeks into the season for the coaches listed below. Remember, we are at the start of the process. In 2020, the silly Coaching Carousel season lasted eight months. When Buffalo hired Mo Lindquist on May 7, it had been eight months since Southern Miss’s Jay Hopson had resigned. Yes, the last silly season lasted longer than the 2020 regular season.

A reminder: this is where we started with our annual offseason, and here is how the hot seats of the 130 FBS coaches were rated. Now we take a second look at a month in 2021.

Below is our rating key. Here is how the 130 FBS coaches were sorted before the start of the season. They were nine in the proverbial hot seat (rated 5 or 4) to enter the season with 14 others starting to feel the heat (rated 3).
