House Democrat tests positive for COVID-19 day after mother dies

representative Susie leeSuzanne (Susie) Kelley LeeMORE (D-Nev.) Said Wednesday she tested positive for COVID-19 just a day after the death of her mother, Joan Kelley.

Lee said she traveled to Ohio earlier this week to see her mother, who had started palliative home care after months of deteriorating health. Lee tested negative just before the visit, but another test on Wednesday gave a positive COVID-19 result.

“I took precautions to maintain social distancing and wear a mask, and out of caution, I took a COVID-19 test before I got to Ohio and again today,” Lee said. “While I tested negative just Sunday, unfortunately I tested positive today for COVID-19.”

Lee said on Wednesday that she was asymptomatic and that she was planning to attend a remote memorial service for her mother this weekend. Lee said she will continue to work next week while remaining in isolation.

“It has been an extremely difficult day for my family. I will be talking more in the coming days about my mother and the pivotal role she played in my life and the lives of my siblings,” Lee wrote.

Monday, Sisolak announced a three-week “hiatus” during which companies would be subject to further restrictions and masked mandates would be tightened. Most businesses will have their capacity reduced to 25% and restaurants will not be allowed to accept walk-in customers.

Nevada has reported nearly 140,000 cases of the coronavirus and just over 2,000 deaths to date. Like much of the country, the state has seen a sharp rise in instances where temperatures have dropped. On November 24, the Silver State reported 2,853 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number of cases reported since the start of the pandemic.
