House Democrats pass bill named after George Floyd

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a sweeping bill named after George Floyd, whose death in custody sparked global protests against racial injustice.

Democrats passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by a vote of 220-212, with the support of a single Republican.

The legislation would prohibit strangling and remove “qualified immunity” for law enforcement, making it easier to prosecute officers accused of violating the constitutional rights of suspects.

The measure was first approved last summer, shortly after Floyd was murdered on May 25 by police in Minnesota, but was blocked in the then Republican-controlled Senate.

Democrats have said they are determined to pass the bill a second time. Although they now control both houses of Congress, it seems unlikely that legislation can pass the Senate without major changes to gain GOP support.
